Memorial Day address about Sergeant Isaac W. Amber, 195-?

Memorial Day address made by Frank W. Lovering around 1955 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts, honoring Sergeant Isaac W. Ambler. In his address, he makes mention of Ambler's relationship with William Scott, the "Sleeping Sentinel". Ambler was one of the soldiers that helped lead Private William Scott, Co. K, 3rd Vermont Infantry, to the front of the firing squad. Scott was to be executed for sleeping on guard, but his sentence was commuted by President Lincoln.

Isaac W. Ambler was born in England on January 7, 1822. While serving in the British Army in Canada, he deserted and crossed the border and a short time later was naturalized. He served with the 6th Maine Infantry during the Civil War , but was never on their rolls. There were two book written about Ambler. The first was Truth is Stranger than Fiction: Biography of Isaac W. Ambler , by William P. Freeman, (Biddeford, Maine: Horton brothers, 1860). The second, apparently revised by Ambler to incl...
